Earthwork & Site Development

Mass excavation, grade control and site infrastructure.

Earthwork sets the geometry for everything that follows. Our grading crews run 3D machine control, our field engineers document every lift, and our superintendents treat drainage as a construction system rather than something to fix after the first storm.

Scope of work

  • Mass excavation and embankment
  • Structural fill and subgrade preparation
  • Shoring, retaining walls and ground improvement
  • Stormwater, erosion and sediment control
  • Site utilities and service connections
  • Paving, curbs and site concrete

Technical capabilities

  • GPS 3D machine control and automated grading
  • Geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring
  • Contaminated soil handling and disposal
  • Deep shoring and temporary earth support
  • Stormwater treatment and infiltration systems
  • Winter earthwork and moisture conditioning

Grade is a control problem

We model the site digitally and run the model in the machines. The survey team verifies the work rather than staking every pass, which shortens the cycle and reduces the errors that come from hand-set stakes in a busy site.

Fill you can prove

Structural fill is placed in defined lifts, moisture-conditioned, compacted and tested against the specification. Field records are tied to locations and dates, so the geotechnical report at closeout describes the site that was actually built.

Water has to go somewhere

Temporary drainage, sediment control and dewatering are designed before excavation begins. We inspect and maintain the system through the wet season, and we do not allow a grading operation to outrun its erosion controls.

Handover to the next trade

The earthwork contractor controls the first impression of the site. We leave a graded, drained, surveyed pad that the concrete, structural steel and process crews can start on immediately.

How does a contractor get on the Craneway Civil Construction bid list?
Submit the enquiry form on our contact page with your trade, license numbers and a current certificate of insurance. Our estimating team reviews new subcontractors and suppliers weekly. Once approved, you will be added to the bid list for the scopes that match your capabilities and will receive invitations through our estimating system.
What is Craneway Civil Construction’s bonding capacity?
We maintain a $150 million aggregate bonding capacity with a $60 million single-project limit through our surety. Current bonding and financial references are included in our prequalification packet, which can be requested from our estimating team.
Do you self-perform concrete, earthwork and pipeline work?
Yes. Craneway Civil Construction directly employs concrete, carpentry, excavation, paving and pipeline crews. We self-perform the structural concrete, earthwork and underground work that sits on the critical path. Mechanical and electrical work is performed by long-term subcontractor partners who are integrated into preconstruction.
How do you handle traffic control and public impact?
Traffic control is planned during preconstruction with the owner and the local jurisdiction, not improvised in the field. Our work plans identify lane closures, detours, access for emergency services and business entrances before mobilization. For larger corridors we provide public information support, including notices, signage and a staffed project line.
What delivery methods do you offer?
We deliver Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build, CM/GC and CM at Risk. Our preconstruction team can support alternative-delivery pursuits with constructability review, open-book estimating, target-value design and GMP development.

Let’s scope the work.
