About Craneway Civil Construction

A self-performing heavy civil contractor, built around the crews who do the work.

Our story

Built from the field up

Craneway Civil Construction began in 1987 with two crews, a rented excavator and a bridge deck repair contract in Pierce County. Nearly four decades later we self-perform concrete, earthwork and underground work across Washington, Oregon and Idaho — with the same operating idea: the people who build the work should be the people who plan it.

We are not a broker of construction services. Our superintendents and craft crews are Craneway Civil Construction employees, and our equipment sits in our own yard. That is what lets us commit to a schedule and a quality standard instead of passing the risk down the chain.

Today Craneway Civil Construction employs more than 280 people, operates a fleet of 190 pieces of heavy equipment, and delivers roughly $300 million of infrastructure work each year for public owners and their engineers.

How we operate

The contractor at the table early

The most expensive decisions on a heavy civil project are made before the first shovel. We join owners and designers during preconstruction, price the risk while it can still be designed out, and bring the superintendent into the room while the sequence is still changing.

That approach costs more in the first month and far less in the last. It is also why more than seventy percent of our work comes from owners and engineers we have built for before.

How we deliver
Operating principles

What we hold ourselves to

Four commitments that shape how we hire, plan and build.

Safety is a planning input

High-risk work is planned with the crew that will perform it, before mobilization — not signed off in an office afterward.

Own the critical path

We self-perform the concrete, earthwork and underground work that controls schedule, quality and cost.

Say the hard thing early

Owners hear about a problem while there is still time to solve it. Surprises are a scheduling failure, not a communication style.

Leave it better than we found it

Better crews, better communities and an asset that outlasts the contract.

Leadership

The people accountable for the work

Our leadership team combines field experience, engineering and a long record of delivering public infrastructure.
